Dorking.
The town of Dorking lies between Box Hill and Leith Hill in the county of Surrey, about 21 miles from the centre of London. It has a population of 11,000 and covers postcode area RH4. The town centre is small and is well-known for its art and antique shops. Although today Dorking is a commuter settlement, it is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. In 1750 the London to Brighton turnpike road opened and Dorking became a staging post. The Bull’s Head and White Horse public houses both date back to those times and can still be seen today. The town is famous for the Dorking Foul; a breed of chicken with five claws, commemorated by a large shiny metal statue on the Deepdene roundabout. Each year the town hosts the Leith Music Festival for local choral societies and in the last two weeks in October the Arts Alive Festival comes to town. The two has three railway stations running trains to London’s Waterloo and Victoria stations and to Guildford and Redhill.
